Any issues with your electric panel that require repair should be left to the professionals. However, it still pays to know a few basic things about this unit so you can deal with such problems in an informed way.

In this post, Anthony's Cooling-Heating-Electrical, Inc., an electrical expert, discusses how breaker panels function and lists some signs that your unit is already in need of replacement.

Electric Panels

An electric panel, or breaker panel, is basically the central point that connects wires from the outside to the wires inside your home. Through this unit, your electric service provider is able to supply your home with energy. Electric panels typically work by tripping the breakers off, then turning the power back on when they’re flipped back into position. Electric panels are commonly located in the utility room or garage.

Signs That You Need an Electric Panel Upgrade

Old homes, especially those that’ve been standing for 20  to 30 years, are often the best candidates for an electrical panel upgrade. Their panels can only top out at 60 or 100 amps, and in this age of smart refrigerators, HD televisions and other high-powered appliances, your breaker panel should have around a 200-amp capacity. When electrical repairs no longer cut it, it’s best to opt for an upgrade.

Furthermore, there are a few signs that you need to look out for that indicate you need to replace your electric panel:

  1. If there’s a burning smell coming from your breaker panel,  this may be caused by a wire that’s not properly connected.
  2. If your breaker panel trips often, the circuit probably needs more power to accommodate all of your appliances.
  3. If you’re in the process of purchasing new appliances, consult with an expert to learn if this requires a panel with a higher capacity.
