Your EV's Battery Doesn't Love Florida Summers Either
Every EV has a battery management system that constantly monitors temperature. When the battery gets too hot — and a car sitting in direct Florida sun for hours can easily climb well past 120°F under the hood — the system automatically slows down
charging to protect the battery from damage. That's not a flaw, it's the car doing exactly what it's supposed to do. But it does mean that charger you paid good money for might be delivering less power than it's capable of on the hottest days of the year.
This isn't unique to any one brand or model. It's physics. Heat is the enemy of battery longevity, and every automaker builds in safeguards for it. The trade-off is charging speed on days like the ones we get all August long here on the Suncoast.
The Charger's Location Matters More Here Than Almost Anywhere Else
This is where a lot of homeowners get surprised. In a cooler climate, where you install your charger is mostly a matter of convenience. In Florida, it's a performance issue.
A charger and vehicle baking in an unshaded driveway all afternoon are working against themselves before you even plug in. A few things we look at when we're planning an installation for a Florida home:
- Garage vs. carport vs. open driveway. An enclosed garage keeps the car out of direct sun, but it also traps heat if it isn't ventilated well — sometimes making things worse instead of better. A shaded carport with good airflow is often the sweet spot.
- Ventilation. If your charger is going in an attached garage, we make sure there's enough airflow so heat doesn't just sit and build up around the vehicle and equipment all day.
- Equipment placement. The charging unit itself has its own heat tolerances. We avoid mounting it anywhere it'll take direct afternoon sun for hours, which can shorten its lifespan and trip thermal protections in the unit itself, not just the car.
- Circuit and panel capacity. Charging equipment run at its limits in extreme heat puts more stress on your home's electrical system. A properly sized circuit, installed by someone who accounts for Florida's temperatures, keeps things running safely instead of tripping breakers on the hottest day of the year.
